Pre-Christmas Season Summary 2021-22
With the New Year upon us it is a good opportunity to look at how the season has gone so far. There have been a number of good performances for both teams and individuals so far and already we have had seven players make their way onto the honours boards including our first ever female entry.
A special mention must go to Tim Pringle for his selection in a New Zealand XI who played a 2-day warmup game against Bangladesh.
Also to Tash Wakelin who made her debut for the Northern Brave Women’s team.
After entering our first girls’ team last year in the Intermediate Reserve Grade we entered two teams this year, one in Intermediate Blue Grade and one in College Premier Grade. Both teams performed creditably and are a great addition to the club. Four of these players are also selected for the Northern Districts U19 Women’s team to compete in the National Tournament in Christchurch. They are:
Tash Wakelin Elle Archer Amelia Harvey Miah Smith
The first half of the season also saw us putting a record nine teams on the park each Saturday as well as our three Sunday League teams. We will hopefully have the same number of junior teams in Term 1 continue with the development of our younger players.

Senior 1st XI
The 1st XI have had a good start to the season and are still in the running to win both the T20 and 60/50 competitions, albeit the probably need a couple of poor results from the Mount in the longer form. Things are looking promising though for the Williams Cup starting soon.
Tim Pringle has been outstanding with both bat and ball culminating in his selection for the New Zealand XI that played against Bangladesh in a 2-day warmup game before the test match.
Fergus Lellman has also been outstanding with the bat giving the club the top batsman and bowler in the competition.
Mayura Galappathithi also took the third best bowling figures in Cadets premier history when he cleaned out Greerton with 8 for 28.

Senior 2nd XI
When looking at the statistics for the 2nd XI it is probably fair to say there have not been any one player who has been outstanding but the team as a whole has performed very well. They are still in with a chance to take out the T20 competition and while they are probably a bit far behind to win the first round of the 50 over competition they look pretty secure in their position to play in the Top 6 in round two.
They also won their first round of the McNaughton Trophy thanks in a big part to an outstanding bowling performance by Peter Southey-Jensen with 6 for 37.

Senior 3rd XI
This season we entered a Senior 3rd XI into the B-Grade competition. Selection for the playing XI has been competitive with a number of players who have previously played in the Reserve Grade playing and seeking selection for the 2nd XI. We have had a number of players who have currently not had much, if any game time which has been a difficult thing to manage but the plan for next year in the Western Bay competition is to split the current 16 team competition into two separate Grades.
It was important for the pathway of both our aspiring 2nd XI and our younger players that we made it into the top eight of the competition pre-Christmas. This means we can enter a 4th XI in the lower competition next year to have a full pathway from college through to seniors. We have asked if we can enter for the second half of the season but it is looking unlikely. By entering this team we hope to be able to cater for all our senior players as well so players don’t miss out.
The team has done well with a few youngsters making big impacts as well, especially Adam Manners and Dan Anderton with there bowling and Te Maniwha Rikihana with the bat. Unfortunately Te Maniwha will be moving to Auckland in the new year so we all wish him the best.
T20 Competition
Cadets are in an interesting situation here with four out of five teams tied at the top of the table and all of those teams playing in the final round.
Top performers were:
Danny Dixon 106 runs @ 53.00 HS 39* (6th in comp)
Adam Manners 8 wkts @ 6.88 BB 3 for 21 (1st in comp)
Dan Anderton 6 wkts @ 9.50 BB 3 for 12 (3rd in comp)
Andre Botha 6 dismissals (5 ct, 1 st) (1st in comp)
Luke McConaghty 6 catches (3rd in comp)
40 Over Competition
Cadets finished 3rd in their pool (thanks to dubious wet weather calculation rules against the team is 2nd after totally dominating) but it was enough to get them into the top tier after Christmas.
Top Performers were:
Te Maniwha Rikihana 203 runs @ 50.75 HS 52 (6th in comp)
Luke McConaghty 170 runs @ 42.5 HS 61 (10th in comp)

College Cricket
In Term 4 there was no College Reserve Grade and with a few late withdrawals before the start of the season we finished with three teams in the College Premier Grade. There were some rules changes also with batsman retiring at 50 and bowlers only allowed to bowl a maximum of 5 overs which will show in the highlights below with a lack of bowlers in the mix.
We had the two boys teams, Green and Black, and for the first time a Girls 1st XI. With 14 teams in the Grade our teams performed very well. Papamoa finished well on top but with one week to go our teams were placed 2nd, 3rd and 4th with the Girls slipping back after losing the final game to Cadets Green.
Final placings were:
2nd Green
3rd Black
6th Girls 1st XI

Oscar Robinson 50* off 92 balls vs TBC Blue (Maiden 50)
Intermediate Premier
After a very comprehensive victory in their first game in the Intermediate Blue Grade it was decided to move the team up to the Gold grade instead. It was a big step up for the team and it was a bit of a tough start to the season for them With the College Reserve team not going ahead at the last minute there was also a surplus of players meaning they never had a consistent team as players were rotated in and out. Hopefully the second half of the season will be a bit more consistant.
A big thanks to the Senior Premier team for giving the boys not playing each weekend a chance to be 12th men for them. All reports have been really positive from both sides so it was a nice initiative to get the youngsters and the senior together for a bit.
Top performers were:
Willem Engelbrecht 67 runs @ 22.33 HS 33 (31st in comp)
Cooper Goodhew 46 runs @ 46.00 HS 21* (58th in comp)

Benjamin Fernandez 4 for 10 vs Mount Kraken
Manroop Singh 3 for 5 vs TBC Cavaliers
Cody Bryan 3 for 18 vs Albion Panthers
NOTE: One scorecard was not loaded and I have note included the first game in Intermediate Reserve.
Intermediate Blue (Cadets Girl’s 2nd XI)
After last year’s dominance in the Intermediate Reserve Grade we decided to move this girl’s team up to Blue Grade despite losing three players to the college team. While finishing 16th of 20 teams they improved a lot over the season and had a number of very close games including one where they lost with the opposition hitting a four to win of the last ball after some very unsporting behaviour from the opposition who lent a fielder and on three occasions the sub fielder deliberately let the ball pass them for four. There is some good talent in this team and I look forward to seeing them to continue to develop.

Primary Team
Another first for the club with a primary team playing in the Division 2 Gold competition. This team was a mixture of players who may have played a season previously and a few players new to the game and there are also a few second generation Cadets players amonst their numbers. Scorecards are not posted for these games but the team have all shown great enthusiasm with both game day and practices and hopefully these boys will continue to play and be the future of the club.
Year 11-13 Sunday League (T20)
Due to the other clubs struggling to put out teams in this age group out team only played one unsuccessful game against Greerton when they were put in on a wet uncover grass wicket which played a lot of tricks early. Hopefully we can arrange some more games for this team in the new year.
Year 9/10 Sunday League (T20)
After a poor first performance midweek against Papamoa the team came back with two great wins against Cambridge and a strong Greerton team. Unfortunately the team fell four runs short against eventual winners Mount Maunganui and fell short also against Lakelands meaning they missed out on the playoff by finishing 4th.
Top performers were:
Dan Anderton 102 runs @ 20.40 HS 40 (6th in comp)
Shima Fletcher 92 runs @ 18.40 HS 46 (9th in comp)

Isaac Loye 3 for 16 vs Greerton
Jake Stott 3 for 22 vs Lakelands
Year 7/8 Sunday League (T20)
Despite losing the majority of players from the team that won this competition last year the Year 7/8 team went unbeaten in defending their title with some good all round performances. Well done to all who took part in the whole competition.

Matt Dow 89 runs @ 29.33 HS 30* (8th in comp)

Final Thank You
The club has had a good start to the season but this does not happen without people working beside the scenes.
Sam Owen puts a huge amount of work into both the senior and junior club so is owed a huge thank you from all.
Thanks to the senior selection panel for their efforts. While the problem of having to leave people out rather than search for players to fill teams is a better problem to have it still comes with some tough decisions, none more so than disappointing people when not selected. It is not always easy but the selection panel has been a good addition to the club this year.
A personal thank you goes to Aaron Loye and Andre Botha for their support on the junior committee which has been a massive help this year.
The committee continues to support the growth in the club and deserves a thank you.
A massive thank you to the parents who have volunteered to help with coaching and scoring for the junior teams. From what I have seen in watching various games and teams our kids are very fortunate to have the quality of interest and support they do. They cannot go ahead without you and it is hugely appreciated.
A final thank you to our sponsors who allow the club to run as it is and provide the opportunities we do.
Let’s all look forward to a great second half of the season and keep playing hard but in a positive spirit as we have been doing so far.
Grant Manners
